Attorney Registration

Registration of Service Address with the Clerk’s Office should match the address information on your W9. We do not have the ability to track separate addresses.

Possible scenarios:

Law firm with multiple attorneys, firm has a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), wants all refund checks to go to the firm and not to the individual attorneys.

Sign up for a Firm number, provide a list of all associates in the firm. Attorneys will be tied to the firm. Both the individual attorney and the firm will show in the Clerk’s computer records. Have all refund orders reflect the Firm number for issuing the check and the 1099. If an ARDC number is used on the refund order instead of the Firm number, the check will be cut to that attorney at the most recent address on file with the Circuit Clerk’s Office. The individual attorney will receive a request to file a W9.

Sole Practitioner, not incorporated, does not have a FEIN, the SSN is used as the Tax Identification number on the W9.

Do not sign up as a firm, even if you practice under an assumed name such as the “Law Office of . . .” Your social security number will be linked to your address record and will not be public information. Use your ARDC number on bond refund orders. The 1099 will reflect the W9 information you have on file with us.

Sole Practitioner incorporated with an FEIN.

Signing up as a firm will allow both your firm name and your individual name to show in the Clerk’s computer records.

Partnership of Professional Corporations, wanting all refund checks to go to the individual PC and not to the partnership.

Do not sign up as a firm. The FEIN provided on your W9 will be linked to your individual address registration. Use your ARDC on all bond refund orders. Only the individual attorney’s name and not the partnership will show in the Clerk’s computer records.

Of Counsel to multiple firms

File your appearance using your ARDC, File a second appearances using the Firm registration number for which you are acting as counsel. For Bond Refund Orders, use the appropriate Firm number or ARDC according to your working arrangement.

Co-counsel

If co-counsel happens to be two firms, both the individual attorneys and their firms will show in the Clerk’s computer records. Use the appropriate Firm number on the bond refund order, as determined by your working arrangement. If one or more co-counsel is a sole practitioner, use the appropriate Firm number or ARDC on the bond refund, as determined by your working arrangement.
